The five output formats and when to pick each
The converter reads JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP files and writes a target format you choose. The target dropdown offers JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF (static frame) and BMP. JPG is the small, photo-friendly default. PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, best for icons and screenshots. WebP is the modern format that usually produces the smallest file at the same quality. GIF exports a single static frame, and BMP writes an uncompressed, fully lossless file.
A quality slider from 1 to 100 (default 92) applies only to JPG and WebP. PNG and BMP are lossless, so the slider has no effect on them. An on-page estimate shows the expected output size.
- JPG: small, good for photos; quality slider applies.
- PNG: lossless, supports transparency; for icons and screenshots.
- WebP: modern, smallest file; quality slider applies.
- GIF: single static frame; BMP: uncompressed lossless.
Batch conversion and the size comparison
The file picker accepts multiple files at once, so you can convert a whole folder to one target format in one pass. For a single file the result panel shows a side-by-side before/after preview with the original size, the converted size and the percentage change, so you can judge whether the new format actually saved space.
The whole flow runs locally: the browser reads each image, re-encodes it to the chosen format, and offers a download. If you specifically need a format path such as HEIC to JPG, JPG to WebP or PNG to JPG, the converter is the right tool; if you need to shrink an existing file without changing its format, use compress.
Step by step
Transparent PNG converted to JPG loses the alpha channel and fills it with a background; if you need transparency preserved, keep the output as PNG or WebP.
- Drop one or many files (up to 20 MB each) onto the zone.
- Choose the target format from the dropdown.
- For JPG or WebP, drag the quality slider (default 92).
- Press convert; the result panel shows the comparison and size delta.
- Download each file, or grab the batch result.
Quality slider, transparency and privacy
The quality slider matters only for JPG and WebP, both of which are lossy. A setting around 85 to 92 is the sweet spot for photos - visibly lossless at a glance but a fraction of the file size. Below 60 you will start to see blocking on gradients and skies, while 100 produces a large file with little visible gain. PNG and BMP are lossless, so moving the slider has no effect on them, and GIF exports a single static frame rather than an animation.
The side-by-side panel shows the exact byte-size delta so you can confirm the format change actually saved space; if it did not, you probably moved to a lossless format. Because conversion is a local canvas re-encode, the source file is never uploaded, which matters when you are bulk-converting product shots or client deliverables. For shrinking an existing file without changing format, use compress; for resizing after conversion, use resize.
- Quality slider applies only to JPG and WebP; PNG and BMP are lossless.
- GIF exports one static frame, not an animation.
- JPG drops transparency; keep PNG or WebP to preserve alpha.
- The size-delta panel confirms whether the swap actually saved bytes.
- Multiple files can be selected at once for a single batch conversion.
- Quality around 85 to 92 is the usual photo sweet spot.
Convert Images Between JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP
Different platforms expect different formats: websites favor WebP for speed, forms often demand JPG, logos with transparency need PNG, and legacy systems still ask for BMP or GIF. PixlReady converts between these formats entirely in your browser and can process a whole batch at once, with no upload queue and no watermark.
Conversion itself preserves the source pixels; only choosing a lossy target format (such as JPG) or lowering the quality setting changes fidelity. Transparent PNG or WebP images converted to JPG automatically receive a white background because JPG cannot store transparency.
Tips for best results
- Use WebP for websites and JPG for broad compatibility with forms and email.
- Keep PNG for screenshots, logos and anything requiring transparency.
- Convert a whole folder in one run, then download the results as a ZIP.
- Compress after converting when you also need a smaller file.
Common use cases
- Turning iPhone HEIC or PNG screenshots into universally accepted JPGs
- Producing WebP images to speed up a website
- Preparing images that meet a portal’s required file type
- Normalizing mixed client assets into a single consistent format
