BMP to JPG Converter – Shrink Huge Bitmap Files
Convert old Windows BMP bitmap files to compact JPGs in the browser. A BMP from Paint, a scanner or legacy software can be several megabytes even for a modest picture; this page rewrites it as a small JPEG on the spot, with no upload step.
BMP is a format that almost nobody chooses on purpose any more - it just shows up in old folders. If you are sorting through a pile of legacy image files, the format conversion scene explains which ones are worth modernizing.
Key features
- Batch-convert Windows bitmap (.bmp) files to JPEG in one pass
- Huge uncompressed bitmaps collapse to a fraction of their original weight
- Client-side canvas conversion; the files never leave this computer
- Any transparency in a 32-bit BMP is flattened to white
- Free of charge, sign-up is not required and output carries no watermark
How to use
- Drop .bmp files onto the drop area, or click to browse for them.
- Each bitmap is decoded and re-encoded as JPEG; the new size is shown.
- Download the JPGs one by one, or as a single ZIP for the batch.
What a BMP file actually stores
BMP is the Windows bitmap format, also called DIB (device-independent bitmap). It arrived with early Windows in the mid-1980s and was the native image format of Windows Paint for decades. Its job is simple: hold a rectangle of pixels with almost no processing in between.
A typical 24-bit BMP stores three bytes per pixel - red, green, blue - row by row, with no photographic compression at all. A 1920 by 1080 picture therefore takes about 6.2 MB on disk regardless of content. A rare RLE compression path exists but is rarely used, and 32-bit variants can carry an alpha channel that most software ignores. That is why BMPs are always heavy.
Why BMP to JPG is such a dramatic size cut
Because BMP stores raw pixels and JPEG uses lossy DCT compression tuned for photographs, this conversion is one of the biggest size wins available on the whole site.
- A 5 MB BMP photo often becomes a 300 to 800 KB JPG - an 85 to 95 percent reduction - with no visible difference on a screen.
- The fixed high-quality JPEG setting keeps detail; the resolution stays identical, so a 2000 by 1500 bitmap becomes a 2000 by 1500 JPG.
- If the BMP contains large flat areas such as a scanned form or a diagram, JPEG ringing can appear near sharp edges; those cases compress better as PNG or WebP.
- 32-bit BMP alpha is treated like any other transparency: it is painted onto white before the JPEG is written, since JPEG cannot carry it.
How this page turns a bitmap into a JPEG
The pipeline is deliberately fixed, because BMP problems are almost always about file size rather than fine tuning.
- Each .bmp is decoded by the browser own image decoder into an offscreen canvas at native pixel dimensions.
- The canvas is filled white, the image drawn on top, and exported as JPEG at a fixed high quality level - there is no quality control on this dedicated page.
- More than one file gives you a combined ZIP download; the base file name is kept, with the extension changed to .jpg.
- If you need to choose the target format yourself - for example BMP to WebP - use the general image format converter, which lets you pick the output.
Where BMP files come from (and what to do with them)
Typical sources of stray BMPs:
- old versions of Windows Paint, which saved .bmp by default;
- scanners and scanner software that still default to bitmap output;
- legacy scientific, engineering and embedded tools that write uncompressed frames.
Convert to JPG when...
- you need to email, upload or archive the picture and the BMP is far too large;
- the image is a photo or a scanned document page with continuous tone;
- you are modernizing an old folder before sharing it.
Step by step: cleaning up a folder of old BMPs
More free utilities for format cleanup and batch tasks are reviewed in the best free image tools of 2026.
- Copy the .bmp files off the old disk, scanner or archive onto this computer.
- Drag the whole selection onto the drop zone; batch input is supported.
- Wait for local decoding and encoding; compare the before and after sizes.
- Download the JPGs individually or as a ZIP, then archive the originals once you are happy.
- If a converted JPG still exceeds a portal limit, shrink it further with the image compressor.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are BMP files so huge?
Because a standard BMP stores raw red, green and blue samples - about three bytes per pixel - with no compression. A 1920 by 1080 picture is therefore around 6 MB no matter what it shows. JPEG shrinks that by exploiting the redundancy inside photos.
How small will the JPG be?
Expect a large drop, typically 85 to 95 percent for photographic content. A 5 MB bitmap commonly lands between 300 KB and 1 MB depending on detail. Flat diagrams compress less efficiently and may show JPEG ringing.
Does BMP support transparency?
A 32-bit BMP can include an alpha channel, but support is patchy. On this page any transparent area is flattened onto white before the JPEG is written, because JPEG itself cannot store transparency.
Will the resolution change?
No. The canvas matches the bitmap natural pixel width and height exactly; only the encoding changes. A 2000 by 1500 BMP becomes a 2000 by 1500 JPG.
Can I convert BMP to WebP instead?
Yes - use the general image format converter, which lets you choose the output. This dedicated page always produces JPG, which is the usual fix for oversized bitmaps.
Are my files uploaded during conversion?
No. The browser decodes the BMP and encodes the JPEG locally in the tab; nothing is transmitted to a server.
Can I batch-convert a whole folder?
Yes. Select or drag many .bmp files at once. Each result reports its size, and batches of more than one download together as a single ZIP.
