Common uses of rotation
- Fix photo orientation: When a phone/camera photo has the wrong orientation, rotate 90° in one click to fix it
- Mirror effect: Flip an image horizontally to create a mirror effect
- Fit display orientation: Turn a landscape image to portrait or vice versa for different screens
- Fix text direction: Rotate to fix misoriented text in scanned documents or screenshots

What the rotate tool actually does
The rotate tool re-draws your picture on a canvas at a right-angle orientation and saves the result as a new image. It offers four angle buttons (0, 90, 180 and 270 degrees) plus two flip buttons (horizontal and vertical). It works on the canvas in the browser: your JPG, PNG or WebP file is read locally, the transform is applied pixel-for-pixel, and the downloaded file keeps the original resolution.
Because 90 and 270 degree rotations swap the width and height of the image, the output canvas is rebuilt with the new dimensions so nothing is cropped. 180 degree rotation keeps the same width and height. Flips are mirror transforms: horizontal flips left-to-right, vertical flips top-to-bottom. You can combine a flip with a rotation in one pass.
- 0 degrees leaves the picture untouched and is only useful as a reset.
- 90 degrees clockwise and 270 degrees counter-clockwise swap a portrait to landscape or back.
- 180 degrees turns the picture upside down.
- Horizontal flip makes a left-right mirror; vertical flip makes a top-bottom mirror.
When to rotate instead of crop or resize
Photos taken on a phone held sideways often arrive with an embedded EXIF orientation tag. Most browsers and social apps read that tag and show the photo upright, but when you need a definitive pixel-true file (a print file, a document upload, a platform that ignores EXIF), rotating to a true 90 degrees burns the orientation into the pixels so every viewer sees the same result.
A rotation is lossless for the 90/180/270 degree angles because the pixels are simply re-ordered, not re-sampled, so the picture does not soften. If you need to trim an edge afterwards, use the crop tool; if you need to change the output dimensions, use resize.
- Correcting a phone photo that came out on its side.
- Turning a landscape scan or screenshot upright.
- Making a mirror copy for a symmetric design or a before/after pair.
- Preparing a portrait file when the source was captured in landscape.
Step by step
The preview shows the original before processing; the result panel shows the rotated output. Everything runs locally in the tab and the file is never uploaded, so you can rotate private photos without leaving the browser.
- Drag a JPG, PNG or WebP onto the drop zone, or click to choose a file (up to 20 MB).
- Pick one angle button (0, 90, 180, 270). The active button highlights.
- Optionally toggle the horizontal or vertical flip on or off.
- Press Start rotate; the result appears in the result panel.
- Download the rotated image, named pixlready-rotate.
Tips, limitations and the local-processing promise
Because the tool only supports right-angle and mirror transforms, it cannot rotate an arbitrary angle such as 15 degrees - those require the free-transform or crop-rotate controls in the image editor. The four supported angles are precisely the ones that stay pixel-perfect: any non-90 rotation would re-sample the image and soften it, which is why it is deliberately excluded here.
A common mistake is rotating a photo that already displays upright because of an EXIF tag. If the preview looks sideways but the file later looks fine on a phone, you are seeing the EXIF orientation, not a pixel problem; burning in a 90 degree rotation is still the safe choice for platforms that ignore EXIF. The output is never watermarked and never uploaded - the canvas work happens entirely inside your browser tab, so private photos, scans and documents never leave the device.
- No arbitrary-angle rotation; only 0, 90, 180 and 270 degrees plus flips.
- 90-degree and 180-degree transforms are lossless re-ordering of pixels.
- Use crop for trimming after rotation, resize for output dimensions.
- All processing is local; the file is not sent to a server.
Rotate and Flip Images Losslessly
Photos taken with a phone or scanner often arrive sideways or upside down. PixlReady rotates images by 90, 180 or 270 degrees and flips them horizontally or vertically, entirely in your browser. Quarter-turn rotations and flips are lossless for the supported formats because pixels are simply repositioned, so image quality is preserved.
Apply the correction to one photo or a whole batch, then download the correctly oriented files; the originals are never overwritten or uploaded.
Tips for best results
- Use 90-degree turns for orientation; use flip to correct mirrored selfies or scans.
- Rotate a full batch from the same shoot in one run for consistency.
- Check the horizon after rotating and crop if the scene tilts.
- Keep JPG re-saves to a minimum by rotating and exporting once.
Common use cases
- Fixing phone photos that load sideways
- Correcting mirrored front-camera selfies and scanned documents
- Orienting product images to a consistent catalog standard
- Creating flipped variants of icons and graphics
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I rotate and flip in one go?
Yes. Turn images by 90, 180 or 270 degrees and flip them horizontally or vertically, with batch support.
Does rotating lose quality?
Rotations in 90-degree increments and flips are lossless for the supported formats.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Rotation happens locally in your browser and files never leave your device.
Is it free?
Yes, it is free with no signup, no watermark and batch processing.
