Background Remover – Cut Out Images & Replace Background Free

Remove image backgrounds with one click using PixlReady. Refine the cut-out with feather, shrink, expand and edge-smoothing controls, then place your subject on a transparent, solid-color or gradient background — all in your browser, with no upload.

Key features

How to use

  1. Upload the photo you want to cut out.
  2. Let the background be removed automatically.
  3. Refine the edges and choose a transparent, solid or gradient background.
  4. Download the result as a PNG.

How the cut-out works, and every edge control it ships with

After you drop a photo in, the engine segments the foreground subject from the background in your tab, then shows the cut-out side by side with the original. A beta hair-aware engine toggle is available for subjects with fine hair; switch it on when the default pass is leaving stray background around frizzy strands. If the automatic mask is wrong in a small region, the manual erase/restore brush lets you paint away leftover background or recover edges the engine removed too aggressively.

Once the main mask is right, the edge adjustment panel is where the result stops looking like a green-screen cut-out. Feather softens the boundary over 0 to 20 pixels (default 1) so the subject blends instead of looking pasted. Shift grows or shrinks the whole mask from -20 to +20 (default 0): push it slightly negative when a thin white halo surrounds the subject, slightly positive when the chin or hairline is chewing into the face. Smooth (0 to 10, default 0) rounds off jagged mask contours.

Backgrounds, export formats and privacy

The new background starts as solid white (#ffffff). Change it with the color picker for an off-white brand canvas, or upload your own background photo and the cut-out is composited on top of it. Export a transparent PNG when you need the cut-out for a mock-up, sticker or further design work; export a JPG when the destination is a marketplace listing that demands a solid background. There is no upload step and no queue: segmentation, edge adjustment and compositing are computed on Canvas in the page, so a portrait photo never leaves your computer.

For batch white-background product shots the Product Photo Studio wraps this cut-out logic into one pass over many files; when you need every marketplace size from one subject, the Listing Pack does the multi-size export. After exporting a listing image, the Image Compressor can bring the file under a platform size cap.

Reading the parameters before you export

A sane starting recipe for portraits is: feather at 1, shift at 0, smooth at 1, despill at 30. If the hair still shows a faint ring of the old background, raise feather to 2 or 3 rather than pushing shift negative, because shift bites into the head outline. If the chin or jawline looks eaten away, shift back toward 0.5 to 1. The retouch panel is a finishing pass only: skin smooth around 15 to 25 evens texture, de-yellow around 8 to 12 kills the warm cast that indoor flash leaves on foreheads, oil shine around 20 cuts glossy T-zone reflections, and brighten below 10 lifts shadows under the eyes without overexposing the rest of the face.

Transparent PNG is the right choice when the destination is a design file, a sticker sheet or a mock-up, because transparency preserves every later compositing choice. JPG export always composites onto your chosen background color first, since JPG cannot carry an alpha channel; that is why picking pure white matters before a JPG export for a marketplace listing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the automatic background removal?

It works best with clear subjects and even lighting; the feather, shrink, expand and smooth controls let you fine-tune edges such as hair and rounded outlines.

Can I keep the background transparent?

Yes. Export as a PNG to keep transparency, ready for product listings, logos and compositing.

Can I replace the background with a color?

Yes. Choose any solid color or a gradient to place the subject on a new background without needing another tool.

Is my photo uploaded to remove the background?

No. The cut-out is computed in your browser and the image never leaves your device.

Is the background remover free with no watermark?

It is free, requires no signup and downloads have no watermark.
