Vietnam Vietnamese Passport & E-Visa (Cục Quản lý Xuất nhập cảnh / Immigration Department) Photo Size
Vietnamese passport photos use a distinctive 4×6 cm (40×60 mm, approximately 1.57×2.36 in) portrait format — larger than the ICAO 35×45 mm standard used in Japan and Korea. The same 4×6 cm passport-style photo is required for Vietnamese e-Visa applications submitted through the National Immigration Portal (evisa.gov.vn / thithucdientu.gov.vn). At 300 DPI, 40×60 mm corresponds to approximately 472×709 px.

Cục Quản lý Xuất nhập cảnh rules and provincial Entry-Exit rooms
Cục Quản lý Xuất nhập cảnh — Vietnam Immigration Department, Ministry of Public Security (xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn) sets the rules.
Vietnamese ordinary passports (hộ chiếu phổ thông) are issued by the Cục Quản lý Xuất nhập cảnh (Department of Immigration) of the Bộ Công an (Ministry of Public Security), received at the Phòng Quản lý Xuất nhập cảnh of each provincial city police. Under Circular 64/2025/TT-BTC (30 June 2025) the fee is 100,000 VND for a new passport and 200,000 VND for a re-issue due to loss or damage. Foreigners apply at the National E-Visa portal (evisa.gov.vn / thithucdientu.gov.vn), uploading the ảnh chân dung (portrait photo) together with the scanned passport bio page.
Vietnamese applicants almost always walk into a phòng ảnh (photo studio): the 4 × 6 cm size is the standard 6-inch print, so studios across Hà Nội, TP. Hồ Chí Minh and Đà Nẵng produce it by default, and the VNeID app route then attaches the digital file.
- Photo studios (phòng ảnh) — District studios take the 4 × 6 cm ảnh thẻ (ID photo) on white background, print two copies and hand over the digital file for 20,000–50,000 VND.
- Provincial Entry-Exit rooms (Phòng Quản lý Xuất nhập cảnh Công an cấp tỉnh) — The police window in Hà Nội, TP. Hồ Chí Minh, Đà Nẵng, Hải Phòng and Cần Thơ receives the form, two photos, CCCD identity card and fee.
- VNeID citizen app — The Ministry of Public Security VNeID app lets citizens file the hộ chiếu application online, pay online or on delivery, and track the result.
- National Immigration Portal (xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn) — The official portal publishes procedures, fee circulars and the e-Visa links; overseas citizens file through the same e-Visa system when eligible.
- E-Visa portal (evisa.gov.vn) — Foreign visitors complete the electronic visa online: upload the portrait JPEG and the passport bio-page scan, pay 25/50 USD, receive the e-Visa by email.
- Embassies and consulates abroad — Vietnamese citizens abroad who lose their passport apply at the nearest embassy for a giấy thông hành (laissez-passer) or emergency passport.
- Shopping-mall photo counters — Counters inside Vincom, Saigon Centre and Lotte malls in major cities print regulated 4 × 6 cm photos while you wait.
- Do it yourself at home — Shoot against a white wall, crop to 472 × 709 px in the PixlReady Vietnam preset, and upload the JPEG to the VNeID or e-Visa portal.
Two online channels exist side by side: VNeID for Vietnamese citizens applying for a new hộ chiếu (with the CCCD chip ID), and evisa.gov.vn for foreigners applying for the electronic thị thực (e-Visa), where the ảnh chân dung upload sits beside the passport bio-page scan.
VNeID filing: 100,000 VND fee, 7-day issue and two printed photos
Vietnamese citizens can now file the hộ chiếu application on the VNeID app or walk into the provincial Entry-Exit room; the 4 × 6 cm photo is the gating document either way, and the new fee under Circular 64/2025/TT-BTC is 100,000 VND.
- Get two 4 × 6 cm prints from a phòng ảnh studio and keep the digital JPEG.
- Citizens file on VNeID with the CCCD chip ID, or attend the Phòng Quản lý Xuất nhập cảnh of the provincial police with the CCCD and the application form.
- Pay the fee: new ordinary passport 100,000 VND; re-issue for lost or damaged passport 200,000 VND, under Circular 64/2025/TT-BTC effective 1 July 2025.
- Fingerprints and the portrait are taken at the window or captured in the VNeID flow.
- Wait about 7 working days; collect at the same room or choose delivery.
- Foreigners instead apply at evisa.gov.vn: upload the ảnh chân dung JPEG and the passport bio-page scan, pay 25 USD single-entry or 50 USD multiple-entry.
- Lost or damaged passports abroad are replaced by the nearest embassy with a giấy thông hành (laissez-passer).
- Border-area travellers use the separate giấy thông hành document under the same Public Security department.
Shooting a 4×6 cm white-background ảnh chân dung
- Stand against a pure white wall; Vietnamese rules demand a uniform white background with no shadow, pattern or furniture.
- Set the camera at eye level, face square-on; leave 5–8 mm of white above the hair so the crown-to-chin span lands at 40–48 mm within the 60 mm frame.
- Keep a neutral expression, mouth closed, both eyes open looking directly into the lens.
- Remove hats, masks, earrings and necklaces; prescription glasses are allowed only without reflection; sunglasses and tinted lenses are rejected.
- Wear dark, plain clothing; tie back long hair so eyebrows and ears are visible.
- Shoot in soft front daylight and pick the sharpest frame.
- Open the frame in the PixlReady cropper and choose the Vietnam 40 × 60 mm preset, which builds the 472 × 709 px image.
- Print two borderless 4 × 6 cm photos on photographic paper for the in-person application, or upload the JPEG to VNeID / evisa.gov.vn.
Use the passport cropper with the Vietnam preset.
E-Visa upload: portrait JPEG plus passport bio-page scan
The e-Visa process at evisa.gov.vn requires two uploads: the ảnh chân dung (portrait photograph) and the scanned passport bio page. The portrait follows the 4 × 6 cm passport style as a JPEG; exact pixel and file-size limits are enforced at upload.
- File format: JPEG for the portrait upload.
- Pixel dimensions: at least 472 × 709 px (40 × 60 mm at 300 DPI) recommended.
- File size: keep the JPEG small enough for the portal, typically under 2–4 MB.
- Background: pure white, no shadow; the portal preview rejects off-white walls.
- Head span: crown to chin about 40–48 mm, 67–80% of the 60 mm height.
- No digital retouching: filters, beauty smoothing and background replacement are rejected.
- Recency: taken within 6 months and matching the face at border control.
- Glasses: no reflection; tinted or coloured lenses rejected.
- Also upload the passport bio page scan as a separate file; the e-Visa links the two.
Compress an oversized JPEG with the image compressor.
Two 4×6 cm prints, the standard 6-inch photo size
Vietnam's 4 × 6 cm passport photo is exactly the size of a standard 6-inch (10 × 15 cm) photo print, so studios produce the regulated tile by default and the in-person application asks for two identical prints.
- Print at 300 DPI so the tile measures 40 × 60 mm exactly.
- Use glossy or matte photographic paper; plain paper and photocopies are rejected.
- Bring two identical prints to the provincial Entry-Exit room; one is affixed to the form and one filed.
- Cut along the crop lines; the clerk measures the outer 40 × 60 mm edge.
- Keep the digital file for VNeID online applications.
- Do not write on the image side; studios may sign the back.
- Scans of prints are rejected — always print from the original digital file.
- The 4 × 6 cm tile also fits many visa packets for third countries; keep a spare sheet.
Print-dialog settings: 300 DPI guide · 200 KB upload guide.
Why the Immigration Department rejects 35×45 mm or retouched photos
- Wrong size: using 35 × 45 mm (ICAO) instead of the Vietnamese 40 × 60 mm.
- Grey or tinted background, shadow behind the head.
- Head outside the 40–48 mm crown-to-chin span.
- Digital retouching, filters or background replacement.
- Glare on glasses, coloured lenses, hats or masks.
- Photo older than 6 months.
- Low-resolution or blurry upload at evisa.gov.vn.
- Smiling with teeth, closed eyes or tilted head.
- Staples or handwriting on the image side.
- Only one print brought to the in-person window.
Minors: 5-year validity and guardian attendance
Children applying for the Vietnamese hộ chiếu attend the provincial Entry-Exit room with a guardian; the CCCD or birth certificate (giấy khai sinh) proves the family relation, and the 4 × 6 cm photo follows the same white-background rule.
- Minors aged 14– under 16 receive a 5-year passport rather than the 10-year book.
- Babies may be photographed lying on a white sheet; the supporting hand is cropped out.
- No pacifier, toy or hat; infants are assessed leniently on eye openness.
- Children over 12 months look at the camera with both eyes open.
- A guardian with CCCD attends and signs the form.
- The fee is the same 100,000 VND for a child's new passport.
- School-age children often use studio photos taken at school — confirm the 4 × 6 cm size.
- Children of Vietnamese parents born abroad apply through the embassy with the same photo.
Vietnamese travel and identity documents around the hộ chiếu
The 4 × 6 cm ảnh thẻ feeds the chip ID card, the e-Visa and the laissez-passer; each document follows the same white-background portrait but a different window.
- Hộ chiếu phổ thông (ordinary passport): 10-year validity, 100,000 VND new fee, issued by Cục Quản lý Xuất nhập cảnh.
- CCCD (căn cước công dân): chip-based citizen ID; the photo is captured at the police station, not brought in.
- Thị thực điện tử (e-Visa): up to 90 days single or multiple entry, 25/50 USD, applied at evisa.gov.vn.
- Giấy thông hành (laissez-passer): border-area travel document issued under the same department.
- VNeID app: the Ministry of Public Security citizen wallet that files passport applications and stores the digital identity.
- Overseas passport replacement: citizens abroad report to the embassy and apply for an emergency travel document.
- Exit and entry stamps and visas for third countries use the same 4 × 6 cm studio print.
- Temporary residence cards for foreigners (thẻ tạm trú) are photographed at the Immigration Department office.
- 外国人在越南证件: giay tam tru (temporary residence card), the tam tru, dang ky luu tru (temporary lodging registration at the local police), diplomatic and service passports for state officials — each attaches the 4 x 6 cm anh chan dung.
- 边境与口岸: Huu Nghia (Lang Son), Mong Cai (Quang Ninh), Lao Cai, Tay Trang (Dien Bien), Moc Bai (Tay Ninh), Tinh Bien (An Giang), Ha Tien (Kien Giang); 空港: Noi Bai (Hanoi), Tan Son Nhat (Ho Chi Minh), Da Nang, Cat Bi (Hai Phong), Cam Ranh (Nha Trang), Lien Khuong (Da Lat), Phu Quoc — the border police check the passport photo on entry.

Gotchas
- Vietnam uses 40 × 60 mm (4 × 6 cm), not the ICAO 35 × 45 mm size; using 35 × 45 mm is rejected.
- The e-Visa portal moved to evisa.gov.vn and thithucdientu.gov.vn in November 2024.
- Both a portrait photo AND a scanned passport bio page are required for e-Visa submission.
- New ordinary passport fee is 100,000 VND under Circular 64/2025/TT-BTC from 1 July 2025; older 200,000 VND references are superseded.
- The 4 × 6 cm size matches a standard 6-inch photo print; studios produce it by default.
