The border tool adds a solid frame of any width and colour

The border tool draws a uniform solid frame around your picture. It takes two controls: a border-width slider from 1 to 200 pixels (default 20) and a colour picker. Five quick colour presets are included - white, black, light grey, light pink and light blue - but you can pick any hex colour from the colour well.

The output canvas grows by twice the border width on each side: a 20 pixel border on a 1000 pixel wide photo produces a 1040 pixel wide file. The original photo stays at its native resolution in the centre, and the frame is a flat, solid colour - there are no rounded corners, gradients or dashes in this tool. If you need rounded corners, use the rounded corners tool.

Why a border is useful

A white border is the classic way to make a photo read well in a social feed where images tile edge-to-edge, and many e-commerce and marketplace templates expect a margin around the product. A thin black or grey line gives a print a finished, mounted look. Because the frame is a flat colour, it is also a fast way to add brand colour around a product shot.

The tool processes the picture locally in the browser. JPG, PNG and WebP inputs are accepted, and the result downloads as pixlready-border. Pair it with resize if the framed image now needs to hit an exact marketplace dimension.

Step by step

If the border looks too thick after download, re-run with a smaller width - the tool always starts from the original file, so you do not stack borders on top of borders.

  1. Upload a JPG, PNG or WebP picture.
  2. Drag the border-width slider to the thickness you want (1 to 200 px).
  3. Pick a preset swatch or open the colour picker for a custom hex colour.
  4. Press add border; the result shows the framed picture.
  5. Download the bordered image.

What this tool does not do, and privacy

The border tool draws one uniform solid frame; it does not round corners, draw dashed or dotted lines, add a gradient border, or produce a double frame. Those effects belong to other tools - rounded corners come from the rounded corners tool, and any compositing or stroke work needs the image editor. Because the frame is a single flat colour, it is also fully predictable for print and marketplace specs: a white 20 px border on a 1080 px square photo lands exactly at 1120 px.

The output grows symmetrically, so the original photo stays centred at its native resolution and is never resampled or softened. The whole operation runs in the browser - the file is read locally, the canvas is drawn in the tab, and nothing is uploaded - which means product photos, scans and personal pictures can be framed without leaving your device.

Add Borders and Padding to Photos

A border frames an image and a padded margin gives it breathing room, the same effect used by popular photo styles that place a picture inside a white canvas. PixlReady draws borders locally in your browser with independent width and color controls, plus optional padding in a separate color, then exports at full resolution without recompressing the original pixels beyond your chosen settings.

Set a thin colored edge for a polished catalog look, or add generous white padding to fit a square social format without cropping the photo.

Common use cases

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add a border to an image?

Upload the image, set the border width and color, plus optional padding, then download the framed result in seconds.

Can I add padding with a custom color?

Yes. The padding and border colors are independent, so you can create white Instagram-style margins or any colored frame.

Does adding a border reduce image quality?

The original image is kept at full resolution; the frame is added around it without recompressing the existing pixels beyond your chosen export settings.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The border is drawn locally in your browser and your photo never leaves your device.

Is it free with no watermark?

Yes, adding borders and frames is free with no signup and no added watermark.
