Choosing position, margin and size like a typesetter
Page numbers are usually the last typographic decision on a document, and the options on this page mirror the choices you would find in a word processor. The position grid is a 2 by 3: two rows (top edge or bottom edge) times three columns (left, center, right). Conventionally, formal reports and essays use bottom-center or bottom-right; legal filings and manuscripts often demand the top outer corner; slide decks frequently skip numbers entirely, so if you are numbering slides, bottom-center in a small size keeps them out of the way of content.
Margin is measured in points inward from whichever edge you picked. 36 points — about half an inch — is the safe default that clears most default print margins. If your document bleeds images to the edge, raise the margin so the number sits on paper rather than on the photo. Font size 12 pt matches body text; drop to 8–10 pt when the number should be discreet, and only go above 14 when the page itself is large, such as an A3 proof.
- Bottom-center + dash format ("- 1 -"): the classic essay / report look.
- Top-right + "Page 1 of N": memo and report style that survives binding on the left.
- Bottom-right + small 9–10 pt type: slide decks and presentations.
- Larger margins (72 pt and up) when the PDF has headers, footers or cropped scans to clear.
How the stamp is embedded, and where it fits after export
The numbers are written as true PDF text objects on top of the existing content, using the standard Helvetica font that every PDF viewer carries. That means the output file barely grows — there is no font to embed — and the numbers render identically in Acrobat, Preview, Chrome and mobile readers. Because they are vector text, they also stay legible if you later compress the PDF on the Standard mode: nothing rasterizes the numbers away.
Numbering is usually one step in finalizing a document. A typical sequence: merge the cover, chapters and appendices; split out any pages that should not be numbered; stamp the numbers; then optionally tile a diagonal watermark over the finished master before sharing an internal review copy. When the document needs to go into a presentation or an email digest, the PDF to image converter can render the numbered pages to PNG for slides.
Common pitfalls, and when to skip numbering altogether
A few things to know before you stamp a deck. First, the counter always starts at physical page one of the file, so if your cover or title page should not carry a number, either leave it unnumbered and accept the offset, or split it into a separate file and number the body on its own. Second, Roman numerals for front matter are not supported — this tool writes Arabic numerals only, because the built-in standard font keeps the file light and predictable.
Third, think about binding. If the PDF will be printed double-sided and put in a binder, the outer edge shifts between left and right pages; bottom-center or bottom-right is the safer choice than top-left, which ends up on the spine side on even pages. Fourth, documents with mixed page sizes (an A4 report plus a tabloid appendix) number every page in the same running sequence regardless of size — that is correct behavior. And finally, if your deck already has numbers burned into scanned pages, adding more will double up, so either skip numbering or compress the scan first to see whether the original numbers are legible enough to keep.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where can the page numbers go?
Any of six positions: top-left, top-center, top-right, bottom-left, bottom-center or bottom-right. Bottom-center is the default and the most conventional for reports and essays.
Which number formats are supported?
Three: "- 1 -", "1 / N" (current page of total) and "Page 1 of N". All use Arabic numerals drawn with the built-in Helvetica standard font.
Are the numbers real text or an image?
Real vector text, drawn by pdf-lib. They stay crisp at any zoom level and remain selectable, and the file does not grow by embedding a font — Helvetica ships inside every PDF reader.
What do margin and font size mean?
They are points (72 points = one inch). Margin is the distance from the chosen edge, default 36 pt, adjustable 12 to 144. Font size defaults to 12 pt, adjustable 8 to 36 — nudge it smaller on small-format pages, larger on posters.
Does it number from the first page of the file?
Yes, page 1 is the first physical page and the count runs to the last. Numbering starts after upload, so whatever pages are in the document get stamped.
Is my PDF uploaded during numbering?
No. The stamping is done locally with pdf-lib; the file never leaves your browser tab.
